Van Halen is currently on their 2012 World Tour and we caught their Charlotte show the other night. 40 years and still going strong! These guys put on a great show complete with Roth’s always-entertaining dance moves, Eddie’s phenomenal guitar solo and a confetti explosion finale!  As the gigantic screen scrolled through image after image during the show, this one in particular caught my attention. Something tells me David Lee Roth must be a Karney calendar girl fan for sure!

Because a passenger adds weight in the back, the distribution of weight is different on a motorcycle than it is when a rider rides alone. The driver needs to be aware that the ride will be different, and he or she will need to compensate for this change in aerodynamics and stress on the bike’s different components. For instance, added weight means the brakes will need more time to bring the bike to a complete stop. Curves will feel different, and balance will be affected, not only by the driver, but by the passenger as well.

Before taking an accompanied ride, the driver and passenger should establish some basic ground rules. The driver should always be the one in control. For instance, a passengers should never put their feet down while riding. This affects the distribution of weight, and can increase the drag if the driver is executing a difficult maneuver in traffic. Passenger can also brush their legs against the muffler, or even sprain their ankles if they put their feet down while the bike is still moving. Likewise, riders need to be instructed to lean with the bike, rather than try to stay upright when taking a curve. While it seems counter-intuitive, leaning with the bike improves the motorcycle’s balance. Passengers who try to keep their spine perpendicular to the roadway disturb the bike’s momentum and balance, increasing the chances of taking the rubber off the road.

For the first few rides, a motorcyclist with a passenger should take some easy, test runs so that both people feel comfortable on the bike, and the passenger can become familiar with how a motorcycle feels when it is motion. Once both people are comfortable, longer adventures can be taken, always with proper protection. When a passenger is involved, both people on the bike should be aware of the risks, and they should wear extra protective gear as a precaution. With practice and preparation, an accompanied motorcycle ride is an enjoyable adventure.
