Tom Hunter

...I would like to nominate Tom Hunter as my Hero. Tom has devoted his life to helping others. When he returned from Vietnam, where he served with the Marine Corps, Tom became a police officer in the State of Maine. Returning to North Carolina he went to work for the Brunswick County Sheriffs Department. In 1996 Tom retired from the Sheriffs Department and went to work for the District Attorneys Office in Brunswick County then later in New Hanover County retiring in 2011. In 2005, while working for the New Hanover County District Attorney, Tom spent three weeks living in the back seat of his pickup truck in Waverly, Mississippi volunteering in the wake of hurricane Katrina. Tom served 16 years on the board of directors for Hope Harbor Home, the battered womans shelter in Brunswick County and is still on the advisory board. He is a member of the Shallotte Elks, The American Legion Post 503 in Calabash, NC, the Legion Riders, a charter member of the Harley Owners Group at Beach House Harley Davidson in Shallotte, NC and a member of Americas Ultimate Long Distant Riders. An avid motorcycle enthusiast Tom has logged over two hundred and eighty thousand miles on his present motorcycle. In addition to a number of local Charity Rides, he competes in the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge a ten thousand mile endurance ride created to bring awareness to the plight of Native Americans who live on reservations in below poverty conditions. At seventy five years of age, Tom is the oldest competitor and the oldest to complete the ride in the allotted time. In 2012 Tom went to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota and was sworn in as a Tribal Attorney for the Oglala Sioux Nation where he volunteers his time with the Red Cloud Law Firm. Tom lives with his wife Marie in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina and says traveling back and forth to South Dakota gives him an excuse to ride his motorcycle
